Once a working-class hotel, and later a pay-by-the-night flophouse, the old Metropole Hotel is now a California historical landmark that also serves as the LitBit headquarters. Built by the DeSaisset family as the Alcantara Building in the late 1800s, the hotel opened in 1903. The building underwent an award winning restoration in the late 1990s. Previously, over two centuries ago, the Pueblo of San Joses first public building, or juzgado, was built on the site in 1798. It was over this building in 1846 that Captain Fallon first raised the American flag in the region.
